Rights Respecting
Ridgeway Primary school aims to be a school where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture, to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. In May 2024, we were given the ‘Gold Rights Respecting School' award, given to schools on behalf of Unicef UK
Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential. A copy of these rights can be found below.
Our pupils will continue to learn about their rights by putting them into practice every day. A Rights Respecting School models rights and respect in all its relationships. We really hope that you will be able to support our school on our journey towards becoming a Unicef UK Gold Rights Respecting School.
Below, you will find some common questions and answers which will tell you a bit more about the Convention on the Rights of the Child. These are the first three important rights:
Article 1: Everyone under the age of 18 has all the rights in the Convention.
Article 2: The Convention applies to everyone: whatever their race, religion or abilities, whatever they think or say, whatever type of family they come from.
Article 3: The best interests of the child must be a top priority in all things that affect children.
The term ‘Rights Respecting School’ is given to schools that put the work of UNICEF at the heart of school life, to create a safe and inspiring place to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. The rights respecting schools award embeds these values into daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
Every child has rights and along with those rights come responsibilities. The adults and children in our school model rights and respect in all relationships. We aim to make children aware of their rights and to be respectful of the rights of adults and other children.
