At Ridgeway, personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) is at the heart of our school ethos.

Our ethos is to give all children invaluable experiences and make life-long memories and relationships that will support them build foundations for life.

We recognise, when children start at Ridgeway, they will have had different experiences. We want to give all of our children positive experiences of the world around them, knowledge of their surrounding and wider environments, experiences of strong, loving relationships and exposure to rich language.

Implementation

The PSHE curriculum will be delivered through direct teaching sessions, experiences and throughout the school day through groups at playtime and stories for example. Our children will look at three areas including Living in the Wider World, Relationships Education (RE) and Health and Wellbeing.

The main body of the curriculum is taught through the Jigsaw scheme of work with a whole school approach from nursery to year 6. Jigsaw holds children at its heart and aims to equip them for happy, healthy lives and to be effective learners.

The areas of Jigsaw that will be covered in each year group are:

• Being Me in My World
• Celebrating Difference
• Dreams and Goals
• Healthy Me
• Relationships
• Changing Me

In Early Years PSED is taught both secretly in group time activities using the Jigsaw scheme of work and throughout the children’s learning through play. Social stories, picture news and visits and experiences all add to the Early Years development in PSHE. Self-regulation, managing self and building relationships will promote the vital early learning our children need to succeed.

In addition to the end of Key Stage statement requirements staff will have a designated influencer to discuss each term. This is based around the stories Little People, Big Dreams and aims to aspire our young people in their future dreams and aspirations.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE programme is to support our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in the future.

• Children will be aware of their aspirations and gain ideas about where they would like to be in their futures.
• Children will know the importance of a healthy body, healthy relationships and a healthy mind.
• Children will be aware of their changing emotions and bodies as they grow and move through puberty.
• Children will form positive relationships and learn how to deal with conflict.
• Children will have self-confidence, self-awareness and a positive body image.
