Music
Intent
In music, we want our children at Ridgeway Primary Academy to experience a rich curriculum which allows them to experience success and develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary. We want our children to be confident in their music knowledge and enjoy a range of music throughout their time with us.
Our music curriculum will ensure children will:
- Develop their understanding and use of musical vocabulary
- Gain a good understanding of the inter-related dimensions of music
- Be able to listen to and respond to a range of different music
- Develop musical skills of singing, performing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, improvising and composing
- Develop their sense of identity by exploring music through historical and contemporary music.
- Enjoy music from different countries and cultures.
- Be able to reflect on what they do and don’t enjoy through being exposed to a range of music styles, genres and eras.
Implementation At Ridgeway, children are taught music in three of the 6 half-terms. They receive a sixty-minute lesson. We use our music progression document, to ensure that our curriculum is both progressive and challenging for children. We use the award-winning delivery medium of Charanga to ensure the national curriculum for music is delivered in each year group. We feel that using the Charanga music scheme ensures our music curriculum is being delivered sequentially and confidently. The elements of music we focus on are as follows:
Progress within music is monitored via recorded performances and learning is documented in floor books.
As of September 2023, we also provide space and time in our curriculum for children to work with a professional music teacher, learning to play a range of instruments, developing their musicianship skills. We ensure these children have opportunities to perform their music to the school or their classes, throughout the year.

Impact The combination of a robust and award winning Charanga and the high quality and engaging teaching at Ridgeway will allow children to make good progress in music. Our children will have a positive start to their musical journeys via exploration and exposure to a wide range of music from EYFS to leaving us in year six. Regular opportunities to improvise with existing pieces along with the creation of Ridgeway originals will ensure that they go to their secondary schools well equipped for the step into Key Stage 3. Performance will become the norm for our children as they progress through our school, resulting in greater confidence as well as skill. Finally, we know that our children leave us with the ability to appraise music and share their opinion appropriately, as per their rights. |
