Implementation At Ridgeway, we learn French as a modern foreign language. Children begin French lessons in Key Stage 2 but get an introduction to basic French vocabulary, songs and rhymes in Early Years and Key Stage 1. Each year group covers three Language Angels units over the course of the year. These units are taught in one hour sessions over the course of approximately 6 weeks. The units have been chosen, with support from the Language Angels team, to provide clear progression in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
French at Ridgeway also has a strong focus on the three pillars of language learning – phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Each year group is taught a phonics unit in Autumn Term. Vocabulary is displayed for the current topic and is built upon as new topics are introduced. Grammar is taught throughout the year, linked in to the topics covered.
We encourage children to actively participate in French, using a variety of the following methods and techniques to encourage and engage:
There are also weekly ten minute sessions, called ‘French Fridays’, where children have the chance to use the Language Angels online games. Tis provides them with the opportunity to children to revisit, repeat and revise previously taught units, either from their current year group, or from previous years. This helps to consolidate the language learning that takes place in our school. |
Impact This approach to MFL at Ridgeway results in engaged and enthusiastic learners and lovers of languages.
